Black Friday laptop at Staples for $350: The Compaq Presario C712US

The Compaq Presario C712US is an Early Bird Black Friday special laptop at Staples for $350, without rebates. You can also receive a free printer after rebate if you wish, but that's optional.

So what is this $350 laptop offering? An Intel Pentium dual core processor T2310, 1gb memory, 80gb hard disk drive, 15.4" widescreen, super-multi-format dvd burner, and of course the obligatory Windows Vista.

While I do not know anything about the laptop in question, specs-wise this sounds like a really nice deal. Of course this is an early bird Black Friday item at a big chain store, so your chances of getting it are of the lottery variety.

Laptop specials from! has a few laptop specials, and the good thing is that you don't have to wait for Black Friday to take advantage of them!

First up at $500 even is the refurbished HP Compaq Presario V6305NR, which features an AMD Turion 64 X2 DC TL-50, a 15.4" widescreen, 1gb memory, a 100gb hard disk drive, dual layer dvd burner, Vista Premium, and wireless. Please note this is refurbished!

If you don't like the idea of refurbished, (and I can't blame you!), the brand new Acer Aspire AS4710-2013 goes for $600 with free shipping. This Acer model features an Intel Pentium DC T52080, 1gb memory, 120gb hard disk, DL dvd burner, wireless, 14.1" widescreen and of course Vista Premium.

If your laptop is hungry for more memory, and if it is using any version of Microsoft Windows, you can bet it is, how about the Kingston 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2 5300 667MHz 200-pin SODIMM DDR2 Laptop Memory for $45? This deal is good 11/19 through 11/25.

If you think the current laptops are too big, there's an alternative, a really tiny 7" ASUS laptop, the ASUS Eee PC 7" Widescreen Notebook for $400 with free budget shipping. Last but not least, has special offers and free shipping on Toshiba laptops:

Laptop of the day: Compaq Presario 730NR for $480 at Best Buy

From what we have seen so far, the laptop of the day is the Compaq Presario F730 at Best Buy for $480, and that price is without any rebates. That's right, no rebates! For that, you can get a versatile performer for the price, including a 15.4" widescreen, 1gb RAM, 120gb hard disk, dvd burner, wireless, Vista Premium, and an Athlon dual core 64 X2 TK-something processor.

Best Buy, along with Office Max, are allergic to rebates, so usually when you see something advertised there, you know that it's a rebate-free offer. Some people like and some even love rebates, but a number of people hate rebates with a passion.

As far as availability of the F730 in-store, I do not know. You can always check the Best Buy website or call the store.

For more details on the Compaq Presario F730, Google is your friend.

Lots of laptops at Circuit City this week

Circuit City starts the week with a bang! First up, at $480 after a $30 mail-in rebate (MIR) is the Compaq Presario F730us with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 DC, 1gb memory, 120gb hard disk, dvd burner, wireless, 15.4" widescreen, Vista Premium and lots more. This is certainly a bang for the buck laptop as it offers a variety of practical features. It obviously does not have all the buzz features, for example there's no webcam, no memory card reader, no fingerprint reader, no expansion slots, but that's why it's $500 and not $1000 :)

At $550 after a $100 MIR, you can get the Toshiba A215-S7422, with an AMD Turion 64 X2 DC TL-58, 1gb memory, 160gb hard disk, dvd burner, wireless, 15.4" TruBrite widescreen and Vista Premium. Lots of similarities with the Compaq above, if you love the Toshiba Satellites, and don't mind the rebate, this is for you!

HP offers the dv 6626us at $650 after two rebates totalling $200. Ouch! You get an Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 processor, 1gb memory, 160gb hard disk, wireless, dvd burner with lightscribe, 15.4" brightview widescreen display, built-in webcam, and the obligatory Vista Premium. If you don't mind the heavy rebate amounts and if you are a fan of Intel processors, take a long hard look at this one.

For those who like 17" widescreen displays, instead of the smaller ones, the HP dv9610us goes for $700 after two rebates totalling $100. The other specs are as usual, 1gb RAM, 160gb hdd, dvd burner with lightscribe, wireless, Vista Premium and such. Oh the processor is an AMD Turion 64 X2 DC TL-58. It also features a built-in webcam and built-in Bluetooth. If you love 17" screens, this is a slam dunk!

A Circit City exclusive is this Toshiba Satellite A215-S7444 for $730, and no rebates at all! This packs some heat, 2gb memory, 200gb hard disk, AMD Turion 64 X2 DC TL-58, 15.4" widescreen, NextGen wireless, Vista Premium, dvd burner, built-in webcam. Not bad at all!

The above laptop is also avaiable in a City Deal bundle for $900 after aa $30 mail-in rebate. This includes the A215-S7444 Satellite notebook, and the NetGear Wireless N-router, WNR834B100NAS, and Firedog service for two (computers).

A more beefed up version is the Toshiba A215-S7462 at $850 after a $150 MIR. This has an AMD Turion TL-60, 2gb ram, 250gb hard disk, dvd burner with labelflash, 15.4" widescreen display, wireless, built-in webcam and fingerprint reader and lots more.

At $900 after two rebates totalling $200 is the HP dv6662se, with an Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo T5250, 2gb memory, 250gb hard disk drive, 15.4" brightview widescreen, Next-Gen wireless, dvd burner with lightscribe, built-in webcam, 12-cell LiIon battery, and lots more. SE in this case stands for special edition.

And while we are at HPs, the HP Expansion Base 3000 is on sale for $150, after a $50 mail-in rebate.

At $1000 even, after two rebates of $200, we have a convertible touch screen HP laptop. This Pavilion, the TX 1320us, features a 12.1" brightview touchscreen with a swiveling capability of 180 degrees. This only weighs 4.2 lbs. Under the "hood" there's an AMD Turion 64 X2 DC TL-60 (not TL-58), 2gb memory, 250gb hard disk, NextGen wireless, dvd burner with lightscribe, Vista Premium, built-in webcam and fingerprint reader. So as you can see just because this is a tiny notebook, it doesn't mean it is it not powerful! Great if you love lightweight but powerful laptops with swiveling or touchscreen displays.

Continuing with the four figures, the HP dv9640us is a multimedia notebook, with a 17" widescreen, built-in TV tuner, Centrino Core 2 Duo blah blah T5250, 2gb memory, 240gb disk, dvd burner with lightscribe, built-in webcam, Vista Premium and such. The price you ask? $1130 after a $50 mail in rebate.

Last but certainly not least is the Sony Vaio VGN FZ240E B for $1200 after a $100 MIR. Judging from the price, yes it's a Sony :) It has an Intel Centrino T7250 processor, 2gb memory, 250gb hard disk, 15.4" XBrite ECO widescreen, built-in webcam, dvd burner, NextGen wireless, and of course Vista Premium.

Dell Wish for the Holidays Sunday paper ad

Dell goes all out on the attack with an eight page ad insert in the Sunday paper. This is using the "Wish for the Holidays" theme and promotes all things Dell, along with their invasion of Staples stores.

A number of laptops are advertised, so let's see what they have in-store in-flyer for us :)

The Dell Inspiron 1501, e-value code 12559-DNPHHY1 is $500. It features an AMD Sempron 3600+, 15.4" HD widescreen display, 1gb memory, 120gb hard disk, Dell 1390 wireless mini-card (b/g), Vista Home Basic and free shipping handling (3-5 day option). All that for just $500!

For $650, the Dell Inspiron 1521 can be yours. It has an AMD Sempron 3600+, 1gb memory, 160gb hard disk, dvd burner, Dell 1490 wireless mini-card for 802.11 a/b/g, 15.4" HD widescreen display, and more. Evalue code is 12559-DNPHLY3.

Next up at $750 but also with a $50 Dell promotional gift card (see terms and ocnditions) is the Dell Inspiron 1420. E-value code is 12559-DNPHJY3. You get an Intel Core 2 Duo T5250, 14.1" widescreen, 1gb memory, 160gb hard disk, Vista Premium, free shipping and handling and lots more. If you want to upgrade to a 320gb hard disk, you have to pony up $100 more.

And if you are a fan of 17" widescreen, not those tiny dinky laptop displays, you pay $850 and you get the Dell Inspiron 1721. This has an AMD Turion 64 X2 DC TL-60 (note the TL-60, not TL-58), 1gb memory, 160gb hard disk, dvd burner, Vista Premium and more. Free shipping and handling. E-value code: 12559-DNPHNY3. You also get a promotional $50 Dell gift card with this guy.

As with all Dell computers, you can configure them to your specs, but obviously adding more features costs extra :)

Dell also offers nine months no interest on new Inpsiron systems when you get a DellCare protection plan. Should you get a protection plan? That is the big question, and that's for a different time :)

Also there, the Dell XPS M1330 is featured for $1200. It has an Intel Core 2 Duo T5250, 13.3" HD widescreen, 1gb memory, 120gb hard disk, dvd burner, Intel Pro wireless 3945 mini-card with a/b/g wireless, Vista Premium and more. You also get a $100 promotional Dell gift card. Shipping and handling is free. E-value code is 12559-DYCHTL1.

One recurring theme from this ad emerges: Dell is stingy on memory, as all advertised laptops comes with 1gb memory. Obviously you can add more when you configure the laptop for your order, but offering just 1gb allows them to keep the advertised price lower :)

Forgive the desktop reference here, but their front page special might be of interest to you, it is the Dell Inspiron 530s desktop for $500, evalue code 12559-DDPHFB1, with a Pentium dual core E2140, Vista Premium, 17" widescreen flat panel, 1gb memory, 250gb hard disk, and dvd burner.

And they do offer free shipping and handling (3-5 days) on all Inspiron PCs and featured accessories and electronics in the ad.

Now let's accessorize! The new 20" Dell widescreen flat panel display, model SP2008WFP, which includes a webcam (!!!) and a microphone is $290. Order code is SP208WFP. Yes a webcam in the monitor! How gimmicky is that? :)

And how about some of the electronics advertised? An 8gb Sandisk Sansa E280 mp3 player for $176, the Fuji Finepix Z10fd camera for $200, and a Philips 47" LCD TV for $1800. Shipping and "handeling" included :) For more check the Sunday paper or the Dell website!

Dell invades Staples stores next week (starting Nov 11)

Dell invades Staples stores next week as they unleash their "mail-order" laptops in-store :) The front page of the upcoming week's Staples circular is full of Dell products! This can makes us wonder, is Black Friday coming early this year at Staples? :)

Of laptop interest, the Dell Inspiron 1521 is featured front page for $780. This ...inspirational laptop features an AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual Core TL-58 Processor, a 15.4" widescreen, 2GB memory, 160GB hard drive, SuperMulti format dvd burner, built-in Webcam, and of course the obligatory Vista Home Premium.

And when you are working at the office or at home, what better way to match the laptop with a 22" widescreen Dell LCD computer monitor for the very sexy price of $270. Not a typo, two hundred and seventy dollars :) It has a 1680 by 1050 resolution, 800:1 contrast ratio and 5ms response time. You can also get a 19" Dell LCD monitor for $180.

Spoiling the Dell party however is Acer with two laptops, one of which is a mere $500. We are talking about the Acer Aspire AS4520 for $500 and no rebates. If you want you can get a free printer after mail-in rebates. What do you get for five hundred dollars? Not a bad deal, let me tell you! It has an AMD Athlon 64 X2 DC TK-53, 1gb memory, 120gb hard disk, 14.1" widescreen display, super multi format dvd burner, built-in webcam and memory card reader, and Vista Premium. Bargain Alert!

The second one is the Acer Aspire AS7720 for $750. This is ideal for people who like 17" widescreen displays because it has one :) Just like the one above, you can get a free printer after mail-in rebate. The laptop itself has an Intel® Centrino Duo Core 2 Duo T5250 processor, 2GB memory, 160GB hard disk drive, dvd burner, a/b/g wireless, built-in webcam, and everybody's favorite Aero-powered Vista Premium.

On the accessories front, the 160gb Western Digital Passport portable drive is $100 without rebates!

Laptop deals at Fry's electronics this weekend

Let's get this Fry's party started!

The HP Pavilion notebooks
First up, for $600 after a $50 MIR (mail-in rebate) we have the HP dv6605us, which is your typical laptop these days, with a 15.4" widescreen, 1gb memory, 160gb hard disk, Vista Premium, b/g wireless, double layer dvd burner with lightscribe, and such. The processor is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 DC 1.8ghz TK-55. Now that's a railroad! How about 64X2DC instead? :)

Next up from HP we have a similarly spec'ed laptop, the HP dv6626us, but this one has an Intel Centrino Duo Core 2 Duo T5250 processor. Another railroad name. Those two microprocessor manufacturers are such copy cats! They even copy each other's names! Shame! Other than the processor the basic specs are pretty similar as the one above. The price is $700 after a $50 MIR.

For $50 more you can get the HP dv6645us which features an AMD Turion instead of Athlon processor, namely the TL-58 1.9ghz processor, and 2gb of memory instead of 1gb. The rest of the main specifications are pretty similar.

At the same price ($750 after a $50 MIR), you have another option, a laptop with a 17" widescreen, the HP dv9610us. Some people do love these bigger widescreens, so that's a welcome option for them. Spec-wise it is similar with the dv6645, but has 1gb of memory instead of 2gb, and of course the 17" widescreen instead of the 15.4" widescreen. Obviously it's easier to upgrade from 1gb to 2gb of memory, than from a 15.4" to 17" widescreen (infact, you can't :)

Moving on, the HP dv6660se costs $900 after a $50 MIR, and it is similar to the ones above, with AMD TL-58, 2gb memory, but a 250gb hard disk. It has the usual assortment of 15.4" widescreen, dvd burner with lightscribe, Vista Premium, b/g wireless etc etc. Please note I am only referring to the main specs here, I am not comparing their spec sheets line by line. There are other differences but they are beyond the scope of this post.

More HP goodies, the XB3000 notebook expansion base is available for $200 even, while an HP notebook sports backpack with black and green stripes can be yours for $40. No rebates for either one.

The Sony Vaio Trio
We have a trio of Sony Vaio laptops in this ad, starting with the Sony CR 240E /B at $1150. You get an Intel Centrino Duo Core 2 Duo T7250 processor, 2gb ddr2 memory, 200gb hard disk drive, 14.1" XBrite widescreen, a/b/g/N wireless (N for NextGen), double layer dvd burner, and more.

Next up at $1500 we have the Sony FZ 260 E/B which has the same processor as above, 2gb memory, 250gb hard drive, 15.4" XBrite widescreen, a/b/g/N wireless, Vista Premium, 1.3 megapixel webcam, and a dvd burner which is also a BluRay ROM. Yes, it plays BluRay. What it doesn't offer is an answer to the dueling HD formats (BluRay vs HD-DVD). With that in question, are you getting the next VHS or the next BetaMax???

The third one is the Sony FZ 280 E/B for $1650. Yes, these are Sony prices. You get the same T7250 processor, and similar specs as the one before, but without the BluRay, but with a built-in fingerprint reader. Not sure what the other differences are to jistify the higher price. Maybe the Sony logo shines more? :)

The lone Apple
The Apple MacBok black 2.16 is advertised at $1494. Fry's informs us that they are an authorized Appler reseller so worry not. This one has a 2.16ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 1gb memory, 160gb hard disk drive, double layer super drive, and a 13" widescreen display. It makes the Sonys look affordable ;-)

Some accessories of note
The Logitech V150 laser notebook mouse is $20 after a $10 MIR. What a pain to send a $10 rebate on a mouse! Grrrrr! The Swiss Gear angle notebook sleeve is $20 after a $5 MIR. Oh boy! APC has a universal LiIon notebook battery that claims to offer up to 4 hours runtime at $90 after a $10 MIR.

Wanna lockup your laptop? The Targus cable lock with a high strength steel cable and up to 10,000 user setable combinations is $15 after a $10 MIR. AirLink 101 offers a slim PS/@ KVM switch for just $19, no rebates, cables included and it supports video resolution of up to 2048x1536.

Emprex has a 4gb usb flash stick drive for $18 only after a $20MIR though. A brandless 17" LCD monitor is yours for $100 after a $20 MIR. Wow! An SD/MMC USB-based memory card reader is just $4, and no rebates. Thank you very much!

Samsung has a 22" widescreen LCD monitor, with 1680x1050 resolution, 3000:1 contrast ratio, 2ms response time, 300cd/m2, all that for $270 after a tiny $30 MIR.

If you can call this an accessory, the Norton Internet Security 2008 suite is free after two mail-in rebates. One of them is an upgrader rebate which means you must have either an older version of eligible Norton software or eligible competitor software.

We are almost done, Lexar offers an 8gb ExpressCard drive for $90, while PQi has a 16gb USB flash drive for 4100 after a $35 MIR.

And before we go, take a look at our breakdown of the sub-$1000 laptops

Two laptops advertised by Radio Shack

Radio Shack's circular that is in effect until November 10, 2007 has two laptops advertised. The Compaq Presario F730 for $550 after a $65 mail-in prepaid gift card, which features an AMD Athlon 64 X2 DC TK-55, 1gb memory, 120gb hard disk, 15.4" widescreen display, dvd burner, wireless, lightscribe, Vista Premium and such.

The second laptop is the HP Pavilion dv6625 for $700 after a $75 mail-in prepaid card. It features an AMD Turion TL-58 processor, 1gb memory, 160gb hard disk, dvd burner with lightscribe, built-in memory card reader, wireless, 15.4" widescreen display, Vista Premium and such.

There's also a special financing offer with a minimum in-store purchase of $199 you get 12 months no interest. You still have to make the minimum monthly payments.

As far as peripherals, the Logitech V200 cordless optical mouse is $20, the Internet keyboard pro $10, a wireless-N USB adapter is $60 on sale, a 4gb Sandisk Cruzer micro usb flash drive is $40. Notebook computers at Fry's Electronics this week

Let's see what Fry's electronics has in store for us this weekend.

At $500 even, and without a rebate is the Toshiba Satellite A215-S7407, tempting potential buyers with its AMD Athlon 64 X2 DC 1.8Ghz, 1gb RAM, 80gb disk, supermulti format dvd burner, 15.4" widescreen, wireless and Vista Premium. A versatile laptop at that price, but obviously it does have some trade-offs compared to laptops at twice the price. Nevertheless this is not just for email and browsing, the dual processors give it some punch.

If you prefer a smaller sized laptop, the Toshiba u305-s7432 is available for $700, and it features a 13.3" widescreen, Pentium DC T2310, 1gb memory, 80gb disk, dvd burner, built-in webcam, and the like. Not bad, given that this is Satellite!

Toshiba offers an affordable 17" laptop as well, the Satellite P205-S7429 for $800. It has some similar specs as the S7407 mentioned above, but with a 120gb hard disk. Obviously the 17" display is the deciding factor for this one, geared towards fans of that.

Sony fans will be thrilled that they can get the Sony Vaio NR160E/S for $800 without rebates, which features an Intel® Core 2 Duo Processor T5250, 1GB memory, 160GB hard disk, 15.4" WXGA display, dvd burner, wireless and the obligatory Vista Premium. Those who want to spend more and get a smaller laptop, can take a look at the Sony VGN-CR240E/B for $1150.

Samsung offers the ultra mobile Samsung Q1U V A110 for $1100. This is a 7" touchscreen tablet PC, with a split QWERTY built-in keypad, a 1024x600 display, Vista Premium, and an A110 Intel processor running at 800 Mhz. It has prismatic LiIon batteries which in theory save space while providing plenty of juice. It also has 1gb memory, 60gb hard disk at 4200rpm, wireless, bluetooth, built-in SD/MMC memory card slot, and more.
