High-end Dell XPS M1730 laptops, are they for you?

Some people like to use the lowest possible priced electronics, other people prefer to get the latest and greatest and be on the cutting edge of technology for their 15 minutes. If you belong in the first group, please feel free to skip this post :)

Today we have two Dell specials that are good until May 1st, 2008. And with good reason, these are brand new high-end laptops, but have the price of a used Honda Civic :)

First up, the Dell XPS M1730 laptop can be yours for only $3564 after $399 instant savings + FREE Standard Shipping!- Expires 05/01/08.

The default configuration for this Civic laptop is as follows:

  • Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T9500 (2.6GHz/800Mhz FSB/6MB cache)
  • Memory: 4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz
  • Disk: RAID Protection: 250GB (2x250GB) 5400RPM
  • Optical drive: DVD Burner with dvd-rw and dvd+rw support
  • Display: 17 inch UltraSharp TrueLife Wide-screen WUXGA
  • AGEIA PhysX™ 100M Processor

  • Warranty: Two year In-Home Service, Parts + Labor, 24x7 Phone Support
  • And: Free Recycling Kit

And you have a choice of four colors, aptly named Sapphire Blue, Smoke Grey, Crimson Red, or Bone White. The last color may become a mosaic of the last few items you drank or ate at the Wifi-enabled coffee shops ;-)

Next up, we have the Dell XPS M1730 laptop for only $3999 after $599 instant savings + FREE Standard Shipping!- Exp 05/01/08. What's the difference between this one and the one mentioned above, other than the price?

Good question, we did a quick comparison and found the following major ones:
  • Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Extreme X9000(2.8GHz/800Mhz FSB/6M L2 Cache)
  • Memory: 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz

Of course as with all things Dell, you can customize them to your liking, but within reason and within the laws of physics :)

If you are a fan of World of Warcraft, be sure to check yesterday's post on a limited edition World of Warcraft Dell laptop. Same family name, but with a WoW flavor :)

What are they saying about the XPS M1730 on the net?
As you can expect a laptop of this magnitude is generating a lot of buzz, especially around the high tech and gadget blogs, along of course with the usual suspects, the computer sites and magazines.

And speaking of the latter, Laptop Magazine has posted a review.

CNet's Prime Minister, Michelle Thatcher, has put it through the paces and produced a technical review, including performance benchmarks and comparisons with other laptops.

Another solid review was posted by one of our favorite laptop review sites, Benchmarks included for those who like to look at numbers and charts adn comparisons. We know we do :) If you are not a fan of reading (!), just page down all the way and read their conclusions segment with the pros and cons.

More reviews? Engadget, the gadget blog, has compiled a list of reviews.

We are a poor blog, we can't afford to buy laptops just to review them, so dear laptop manufacturers please send us review units :)
