Eight hot laptops at Best Buy this week (April 27 to May 3)

There are eight laptops advertised in this week's Best Buy circular ads, which you can find online or conventiently stashed away in your Sunday paper! So, let's take a look! As always, there are no rebates to send, the price you see is the price you pay at Best Buy!

Under $750
We start at $450, with the lovely Toshiba Satellite A205-S5825, a Best Buy exclusive model, powered by the Intel Pentium dual core processor, 1gb of ddr2 memory, 120gb disk, dvd burner (dual layer), 15.4" TruBrite widescreen, Vista SP1, and such. Limit one per household. As you can see this is your typical sub-$500 laptop, but if you compare to a year ago, you sure do get a lot more bang for the buck! While this is not a speed-demon there are a lot, a lot of tasks, you can perform with this laptop!

Next up at the magic $500 mark, we find the Dell Inspiron I1525-1008. As the model name suggests, it has a 15.4" widescreen display. Also a Pentium dual core processor, 2gb of memory, 160gb disk, dvd burner (dual layer), Vista SP1, and such. Also one per household, so keep the wig and moustache and fur coat handy ;-) And the launch of the Vista Service Pack One (SP1) is a good way for you to easily tell whether you are looking at a new or older computer. Of course nothing stops them from unbundling and rebundling the computer :)

And now we take a $100 jump to $600 where we find the Gateway T1628 waiting for us. This lovely is loaded with the AMD Turion 64 X2 DC processor, 3gb memory, 250gb disk, dvd burner (dual layer, labelflash), built-in webam and Vista SP1. The display is a 14.1" Ultrabright widescreen, making it a reasonable compromise between size and portability. This is powered by the ATI Radeon X1270 graphics system. One per household and a Best Buy exclusive model as well.

The last one in this price category si the Toshiba L355-S7812 at $700, also an exclusive and one per household. This is targeting buyers who love bigger screens, because it has a 17.1" TruBright widescreen display. Also an Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo, 3gb memory, 200gb disk, dvd burner, built-in webcam and Vista SP1. Yum???

Over $750
At $800 even we find another exclusive, the Gateway M6846, with an Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo. Four gigabytes of ddr2 memory makes this the best alternative to brining an elephant with you, along with a 320gb hard disk. The display is your typical 15.4" ultabright widescreen. Notice how all the retailers try to use the same name but with different words. Oh the silliness of the marketing world :) Also dvd burner, built-in webcam, and the dreaded loved Vista SP1. Minimum five per store, one per householf, no rainchecks. Prepare for a fist fight over this model?

Next up we have a special edition model from HP, also a Best Buy exclusive, the Pavilion dv6885se at $1000. What do you get for that much? A 15.4" HD-brightview display fueled by the nVidia GeForce 8400M GS graphics module with Direct-X10, Centrino Core 2 Duo T8100, 3gb memory, 250gb disk, Vista SP1, dvd burner, nextgen wireless (N), built-in webcam, and lots more! Also note the special lovely color scheme of the laptop itself.

Moving along at $1250 we find the Gateway P6860-FX, and its power is reflected in the price and model name! It's 17" ultrabright widescreen is fueled by the nVidia geFORCE Go8800M GTS with 512mb of discrete video memory and DirectX 10. Also a Centrino Core 2 duo processor, 4gb memory, 320gb disk, dvd burner, wireless-N and Bluetooth too, built-in webcam and lots more. This Best Buy exclusive is a new model.

It is also avaiable in a special gamer's bundle for an extra $50. The special bundle includes one free game for Windows up to $50 in value, and a "game optimization" service. All must be purchased together in one ticket. A ticket to ride?

Last but certainly not least is a professional series laptop - Best Buy's words, not ours :) This is the Sony Vaio VGN-SZ750N/C for $1750. The 13.3" widescreen display keeps it small and portable, but it's no slouch in performance as it has an Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo T8100, 2gb memory, 250gb disk, Vista Business, dvd burner, nVidia 8400M GS, Wireless-N and Bluetooth, built-in mobile broadband capability, fingerprint reader and webcam too. That and more along with the Sony brand can be yours if the price is right :)

Accessories
With the temperatures increasing, it's a good idea to use a laptop cooler, especially if your particular model heats up with regular use. The Targus Chillpad AWE01US is on sale for $30, and as a bonus it has four (4) USB ports on it!

If you are worried about the surface you are placing your laptop, you should consider the Belkin FBN060-BRN laptop and accessory bin for $40. Works for laptops up to 15.4" and has storage space too.

If you are not going far, or if you are double-bagging, the BuiltNY neoprene laptop sleeve (black or dotted) can be yours for $25. Model names are E-LS15-BLK and E-LS15-DO7.

Not quite the Unix boot sequence, but the init NT-NB101M laptop briefcase is only $20 and works with laptops up to 15.4". Yes, this is a traditional old-school laptop briefcase, nothing fancy or trendy. Ideal for humble people :)

If you want to feed your laptop an extra 1gb of PC5300 DDR2 memory, the Corsair XMS2 VS1gb667D2 is on sale for $30!

Meanwhile for extra backup storage, 100-packs of Sony blank DVD-R and DVD+R discs are on sale for $23 per spindle. That's a nice price (23c per blank) for the Sony brand. We do not know what the media code is, or whether these Sony blank dvds are made in japan or made in taiwan or elsewhere. We suspect it may vary from store to store, or even shelf to shelf. It's sort of like a lottery! If you are lucky, you may find the reveered Made in Japan!

For more details and such, be sure to check the Best Buy website. Happy shopping :)

The Inbox (Processor Wars, AT&T Wifi at Starbucks, and more)

Yes, processor wars! Intel celebrates 10 million quadcores says CNet, while AMD, well you have to read on to find out what AMD is doing :)

We all know that the main reason laptops became affordable was so that Starbucks can sell more lattes and mochas! That's why! They want the laptop users to veg out there and keep on buying sugary drinks and $1 sandwiches with fancy names so they can charge $6 :) So with that intro in mind, the AT&T/Starbucks Wifi phase one boots up on May 1st. But this phase is only for AT&T customers!

Viva Ubuntu! Now Ubuntu finds its way in Nokia internet tablets. Go Ubuntu go! Details at Crunch Gear!

If you are a fan of the toshiba Qosmio laptops, be sure to check this Radio ShaQ special: save Over 25% on the Qosmio laptop - only $949.99 until 4.30.08. This lovely F45-AV423 notebook PC uses a 15.4" widescreen display, 2gb of PC2 5300 DDR2 SDRAM, 250gb hard disk, super multi format dvd burner, Harman Kardon speakers, WiFi, built-in webcam, and lots more.

It's not a bed of roses for the XO Notebook in Peru. It's never easy isn't it? Daily Tech has the story.

Good customer service? That is almost as rare as good coffee these days! Perhaps this is why Dell is plannign to upgrade their customer service says Crunch Gears.

Reviews

Laptop Accessories
Fretting that your notebook does not have a webcam while everybody else seems to have one? Fret no more! For just $20 you can get the Creative Labs VF0250 Live Cam Notebook Pro WebCam from J&R World! Take that expensive laptop snobs :)

And if you love PayPal, see the offer below that can save you an extra $20 on this order, or any other CompUSA offer that fulfills the special offer requirements.

Love PayPal?
If the answer is yes, the newly rebooted CompUSA, now powered by Tigerdirect, is having a tempting special: Get 10% Cash Back with Paypal on CompUSA.com. The maximum cashback is $20, and the minimum order is $200, so as you can see the sweet spot of this offer is an order in the neighborhood of $200 or so. But don't let the sweet spot of the offer hold you back if you want to buy a more expensive item. $20 off is still $20 off regardless :)

April Showers of Savings at Fry's Electronics

What do the laptop April showers at Fry's bring us? Well, well, well, let's take a look!

First up, it is raning Compaq Presario C769us models. Their price is $600 after a $30 mail-in rebate, and this includes an Intel Pentium dual-core T2370 processor, 2gb of ddr2 memory, 250gb of hard disk space, dvd burner with double layer, wireless of course, a lovely 15.4" widescreen display, and Vista Premium. Limit one per customer they say, so keep the wig, moustache, and fur coat handy in the car ;-)

With the demise of HD-DVD, Bluray is attempting to make quick inroads to the hearts and minds of the general public. And for just over one thousand dollars ($1050 after $50 MIR), you can get the HP Pavilion 6880se which does indeed feature BluRay-ROM, meaning it can play but cannot record BluRay discs. You also get the usual dvd burner capability, with dual layer and super too for the Panasonic DVD-RAM fans. Apart from that, the laptop is powerd by an Intel Core2 Duo Centrino blah blah T5550, 3gb memory, 250gb disk, Vista SP1, wireless a/b/g, 15.4" widescreen, built-in webcam, and much more!

If you find the Sony Vaios adorable, prepared to lose $1400, which is what you have to pay to get the Sony Vaio FZ460E/B, with a 15.4" widescreen, Centrino Core 2 Duo T8100, 2gb memory, 250gb disk, dvd burner with BluRay playback, wireless (N included), Vista Premium, and such. Time to start singing "Go BluRay?" :)

The Attack of the 17" widescreens
Next up,for fans of 17" laptops we find the HP Pavilion dv9810us, for $750 after a $50 mail-in rebate. Not bad for a 17-incher, which also has 3gb memory, 160gb hard disk, dvd burner with lightscribe, wireless, and of course an AMD Turion 64 X2 DC TL-60 processor. Yes, you get the "lovely" Vista Premium as well. Also one per customer. See comment about wig above if you want more ;-)

For slightly more, $900 after a $50 MIR to be precise, you can get the HP Pavilion dv9820us. This lovely has an AMD Turion 64 X2 DC TL-62 processor, 4gb ddr2 memory, 250gb disk, dvd burner with lightscribe (dual layer too), wireless (N included), Vista Premium 64-bit, and such.

If you have a soft spot for the Centrino Core 2 duo processor from Intel instead, you can find the T5550 buried deep inside the HP Pavilion dv9830us, but be prepared to pay $1250 after a $50 mail-in rebate. That's almost twice as much as the one mentioned above. This uy has 4gb of memory however, 320gb hard disk, Vista SP1 (Service Pack One (of many for sure)), Blu-Ray player, dual layer dvd burning capability, wireless (N included) and such. Note that this is 64-bit Vista! More bits to get corrupted and bluescreen? :)

Oh but we are not done with the 17" widescreens, there's two more from Toshiba, starting with the Satelite X205-S9810 for $1300, no rebates however. This is powered by the Intel Centrino Duo T5750, 3gb memory, 320gb disk, dvd burner, wireless, bluetooth, built-in webcam, Vista SP1, NVidia and lots more!

And if you really want to stretch your budget (or credit limits), the Toshiba X205-SLi5 can be yours for $1800, and for that you can get an Intel Centrino T8300 Core 2 duo blah blah, 3gb memory, 320gb disk space which is two 160gb disks actually. Also dvd burner, wireless AGN from Intel, NVidia SLI Dual GeForce 8600M GT graphics system, built-in webcam, Info LCD bezel, Vista Premium and much more, so as to justify the price :)

An Apple a day...
And of course we don't want our Macintosh fans to feel left out, so we have two MacBooks featured in this week's ad. First up, at $1100 we find the MacBook White 2.1ghz with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 1gb memory, and 120gb disk and combo drive. Can Apple spell s-t-i-n-g-y on features (or high on price?).

And for those who love their laptops almost as thin as today's supermodels, $1800 will get you the MacBook Air with an Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6ghz processor, 2gb memory, 13.3" glossy widescreen, and a 4200rpm 80gb hard disk. Stingy!

For more details, store locations, product availability and such, be sure to check Frys.com.

The Inbox (XP lives for ever, Toshiba cries, rebate tips)

XP fans rejoice! Your favorite OS will live for ever! Well, almost forever! Both Dell and Lenovo will continue to offer Windows XP with some of their computers as an option even if MicroBalmer decides to axe it. Go XP! Go Dell! Go Lenovo!

Do cry for Argentina and Toshiba too! Their HD-DVD "success story" has taken a "tiny" chunk out of their profits. Poor Toshiba! If you are a Toshiba fanboy be sure to go out and buy Toshi products to defend your favorite brand :)

It's not business as usual, but a sale as usual at Tigerdirect, where the HP Compaq 6720s Laptop can be yours for $550 after a $100 mail-in rebate. The rebate expires on May 31st, 2008, so you do have plenty of time, but don't sleep on it! If you do plan to submit rebates, be sure to read the instructions, follow the instructions, and make a copy of everything you submit. Also use a simple organizing system to keep track of them: Put all your rebate copies in a folder, and when a check arrives remove it. That way the folder will always contain all your pending rebates. So you can easily find out which rebates you have to chase!

Crunch Gear has something special, a tiny Japanese import laptop review, the Vye S37. Oh it's so tiny and so cute! But is it worth the risk of an import item and the assorted warranty issues that go with it?

Accessories
This is a rather big accessory infact, the Panasonic TH-42PZ80U Viera, a 42 inch 1080p plasma HDTV from Panasonic. OneCall offers it for $1285 and the good news is that shipping is included in the price, which is a good thing for a big plasma TV :)

And what better way to test your new plasma than a free one month membership for Blockbuster Online! It's like Netflix, but you can also take advantage of your local Blockbuster stores. This is especially good if you live near a Blockbuster store.

The Inbox (Ubuntu, Earth Day, new laptops, and more)

We are now trying a new feature, "The Inbox" which will be a round-up of notebook and laptop related stories from around the net! Let us know what you think!

A recent open source census has Ubuntu taking over almost half of the market. Details at CNet News. Go Linux! Go Open Source! Go! Go! Go!

Earth day! Celebrate! ASUS will be shipping bamboo laptops in June, says Engadget.

Sony celebrates Earth Day with a special promotion that helps them and you too. Especially if you have a rotting laptop that has no value on eBay or anywhere else :) Recycle your old notebook: Get up to $250 towards a new VAIO® notebook with the Sony Style Notebook Trade-in Program.

If you are curious about the new and improved Dell Vostro business laptops, especially the smaller 13" models, be sure to check the early review of the Vostro 1310 at NoteBookReview.com. Oh it makes me want to get one now, as spec'ed but at the starting price :)

Acer is working on a laptop using the new Intel Atom processor says PC World. The trends are funny, we go from giant big to tiny small, and the normal middle-of-the-road size becomes the best bang for the buck. Look at LCD HDTVs too, a similar thing!

If you don't think there are enough Eee PC alternatives, then consider the Medion Akoya Mini E1210, featured at Slash Gear.

Meanwhile the HP Pavilion dv9700t gets a review at NotebookReview.com. Yes, this is a 17" desktop-replacement consumer-tier type of laptop. Check out the review! Will it cause you to dv8 from your favorite brand purchases? :)

If you are a fan of refurbished notebooks, then this might peak your interest, save $180 on the Sony VAIO® NR VGN-NR160E/S Notebook (refurb), now just $650. Don't sleep on it though, this ends on Wednesday April 30th. Actually there is a week left, so you can sleep on it :)

Meanwhile the good people at J&R World have a new special, the Lenovo 7658-RUU ThinkPad T61, which is a 14.1" notebook for $900 with free shipping and handling. This is powered by the Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 processor, 1gb of memory (max 4gigs), 120gb SATA 5400rpm hard disk, Intel X3100 powering the 14.1" widescreen, dvd burner, fingerprint reader, Express card, PCMCIA Type II slot, wireless, ethernet and the usual assortment of features found in this price range. Oh and XP fans will love this: It comes with Windows XP Professional! Take that Vista :)

And if you want to accessorize at the same time, for $40 you can get the Targus TBR003US Rolling Notebook Case. Can you ever have too many laptop bags? For one thing, it's a lot cheaper to buy laptop bags than new laptops :) It's two orders of magnitude cheaper infact, so accessorize with passion :)

And now something new, five new laptops from the good people of Toshiba. HD-DVD not included :) Ouch! Oh we are so mean to poor Toshi :( SlashGear has the five new Satellite Pro models. A wide range of prices, approaching the affordable at under $700 and of course moving on up the price ladder.

You can't figure out the screen size from the model names, which can be frustrating since there are so many laptops getting released left and right, let alone the "special editions" that create even more confusion. Anyway, the five new models are the U400, M300, L300, L300D and L350. More on the new Toshiba Fab Five at Crunch Gear, Electronista, Cnet Crave, and many other places too.

New exclusive Laptops Arrive at Best Buy (April 20 to 26)

Best Buy is no longer spring cleaning. Instead they have a new wave of laptops arriving at their shores stores. And they are Best Buy exclusives! Although you may be able to find similarly spec'ed models with slightly different model names elsewhere.

New Best Buy exclusive laptops!
We start as always with the lowest priced model, this newbie is no slouch, it packs a punch! And it is a very recognizable brand, it is a Toshiba! So for just $500, and as always no rebates, you can get the Toshiba A215-S5837. This is a do-it-all laptop and the price is amazing. You get a 15.4" widescreen, 2gb of memory (yes, two), 160gb hard disk drive, dvd burner (dual layer), ATI Radeon X1200 grpahics, and Vista SP1! Obviously you can't expect to get the same features or mobility as with a $1000 laptop, but for the majority of tasks this promises to be a must-have do-it-all laptop!

We checked the internets but did not find any reviews of the A215-S5837 at the moment. Not a surprise since this is a brand new model, and with so many models coming out in a short period of time, it's hard for the laptop review sites to review them all right away.

The next NEW exclusive comes from the HP-Compaq conglamorate. It is the Compaq Presario A931nr for $600. This "Q" (no, not Star Trek's Q), has an Intel Pentium dual core processor, 3gb of DDR2 memory (yes, three), 160gb hard disk, dvd burner, with lightscribe too, built-in webcam, Vista SP1, and get this, a 17" widescreen display. A 17" widescreen BRAND NEW laptop for $600? Oh my! The prices are falling!!! Stock up now :)

The next new exclusive is the HP dv6815nr at $650. This Pavilion has an AMD Turion 64 X2 DC processor, 3gb of ddr2 memory, 160gb hard disk, dvd burner with lightscribe, a 15.4" HD widescreen fueled by the nVidia GeFORCE Go7150M graphics module, and the lovely (?) Vista SP1.

At the same price as above, you can get the Toshiba A305-S6825, powered by the Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo, 3gb of ddr2 memory, 250gb hard disk, dvd burner with labelflash (not to be confused with lightscribe), built-in webcam, 15.4" widescreen and of course Vista SP1. Vista SP1 is the sign of a new laptop since the older laptops obviously do not have SP1, unless they get unboxed, upgraded and reboxed :)

Next up at $800 we have the exclusive HP dv2845se, "se" of course standing for special edition. This has a 14.1" widescreen display so it is geared towards the more mobile crowd. But don't let mobility fool you, it has 4gb of ddr2 memory (yes four gigabytes), 250gb hard disk, AMD Turion 64 X2 DC, dvd burner with lightscribe, nVidia GeForce Go7150m graphics system, built-in webcam, Vista SP1 and lots more!

Last but not least for sure, at $1050, we find the HP dv9825nr. What makes this Paviliion cross into four-figures? A 17" HD Brightview widescreen powered by the nVidia GeForce 8600M GS graphics module with Direct X 10, Centrino Core 2 Duo, 4gb of memory, 320gb hard disk, dvd burner with lightscribe, built-in webcam, and lots lots more!

More Laptops in the Sunday circular
But wait, there's more! The list above was the Best Buy exclusive models, but those are not the only ones offered by Best Buy. There's more! As always we present the lowest prices first :)

And that's where we find an "affordable" Sony. That's right, a Sony for $680, and it's a brand new model, the Vaio VGN-NR385E/W. As the "/w" indicates this is a white finish model, so it can keep track of what you had for breakfast, lunch and dinner ;-) It has a 15.4" widescreen, Centrino Core 2 Duo processor, 2gb memory, 200gb hard disk, dvd burner, and Vista SP1. Not bad considering the brand :)

Next up at $850 we find the Dell Inspiron I1420-1038, with a 14.1" Truelife widescreen. As the screen size indicates, this is a more mobile laptop, but it has 3gb of memory, 320gb of hard disk, dvd burner, built-in webcam, and Vista SP1. This is also a new model. New is indeed the theme of the week at Best Buy this week :)

And we finish with the Apple MacBook MB403LL-A at $1300. Finally Apple woke up and there is a DVD burner (duh!!!). This laptop is controlled by the fingerpainting program (aka Mac OS X Leopard with Life 08), a 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo processor, 2gb memory, 160gb hard disk, dvd burner, built-in webcam, bluetooth and wireless-N, and a lovely 13.3" widescreen.

Accessorize
Lots of others computer accessories and peripherals are advertised in the Sunday paper, the most exciting perhaps the in-store exclusive cherry-red or blue Western Digital My Passport Elite 2.5" portable hard disk drives. Available for $140 for 250gb and $170 for 320gb. The model names are WDML2500TN/WDMLRC2500TN and WDMLB3200TN/WBMLZ3200TN. The color code in the model name is as follows:
* RC: red-cherry
* Z: bronze
* B: blue
* no-code: titanium

These are new models and they include a handy gadgety lighted capacity meter.

For these and ltos more be sure to check the Best Buy website or your local store or Sunday paper.

Four laptop specials at Staples (April 20-26, 2008)

We have a quartet of laptops at Staples this week. This weeks lacks the doorbuster under $600, and it is geared a bit more towards the mid-range price-range, the over $750 crowd as you can see right below.

We start at $790 after Easy Rebate with the HP dv9810us . This is an entertainment notebook, as you can perhaps guess by its 17" widescreen display. Other helpful feature for entertainment purposes are a 64 X2 Dual-Core TL-60 (2.0GHz) processor, 3gb of memory, 160gb hard disk, supermultiformat dvd burner with lightscribe with double layer support too, built-in webcam, and Vista SP1 among other features. The supermultiformat option is of value to people with stand-alone Panasonic DVD recorders as they can take advantage of their DVD-RAM discs. Yet another little nugget that adds to the value of this laptop as an entertainment laptop. Just don't compare it with your 60" 1080p HDTV side by side :)

At $795 after a Staples Easy Rebate, we find the HP dv6756us laptop. This Pavillion features an Intel Core 2 Duo T5450 1.67ghz processor, 2gb memory, 160gb hard disk, 15.4" widescreen, built-in webcam and memory card reader, and Vista Premium, not Business like the online ad erroneously states. The weight is just over six pounds.

Next up at $800 we find the Dell Inspiron 1721-P81, which has a 17" widescreen display, a boon to fans of bigger laptop displays for sure. It also has an AMD Turion 64 X2 DC TL-60 processor, 2gb memory, 250gb hard disk drive, supermulti-format dvd burner, NextGen wireless and Bluetooth, built-in webcam, Vista Premium, and lots more.

Last but not least, at $1010 after Easy Rebate (someone is having fun playing with numbers at Staples?) is the HP tx2110us, which has a 12" convertible touchscreen display. Convertible screens are the ones that can twist, swivel, rotate and occasionally ...shout :) Touchscreen is of course a screen that responds to tactile input/feedback. Not sure if it can tell whether you had KFC Crispy or Original. That's the next step after all laptops get face verification ;-)

But don't let the small screen size of the laptop above fool you! It's powerful folks! It has an AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core TL-62 (2.10GHz) processor, 3gb memory, 250gb hard disk, dvd burner with lightscribe, built-in memory card reader, Vista Premium SP1 (oh the horror?), and weight around 4.5 pounds.

And one more thing, Staples is having special recycling promotions to celebrate Earth Day. Surely other retailers will also be offereing similar promotions so be sure to check at your local store, newspaper, or website for more details.

Acer AS5315-2122 for $400 ARGC at Radio Shack!

How about that? A $400 laptop after you submit and receive and cash a $150 mail-in rebate prepaid gift card! Not bad, especially if you are a regular Radio Shack shopper or you plan to use the $150 rebate gift card as a gift, or sell it on eBay or trade it at a gift card exchange website.

The laptop in question is the Acer Aspire AS5315-2122 which has a 15.4" widescreen display, 1gb memory, 80gb hard disk, Celeron 550 processor (not dual core), cd burner with dvd playback, b/g wireless, and Vista Basic. You can also double the memory (RAM) for an extra $30. As you can see, this is an "old school" laptop as you don't get a dvd burner or a dual-core processor. But if you need a laptop for the more basic tasks (surfing the net, checking email, watching movies, etc) this should be more than good enough. Please note that the rebate special does not apply in Rhode Island or Connecticut (not sure why).

For more details on all the Radio Shack products and specials, check the link in the picture below!

RadioShack

Accessories
You can get a retractable optical travel mouse for just $10, half the regular price. This is a Gigaware brand. You can also get a Netgear 802.11g wireless router for $40, and an iomega 160gb external portable hard drive for $90. Also, a 4gb Sandisk flash drive for $30!

A trio of laptop temptations tantalizes Staples buyers!

Oh my what a title :) But it is true, the three laptops included in the Sunday paper circular ad for Staples are tempting! Yes, they are! And here they are, more details as always at Staples.com, which uses Shop Local to match zip codes with specials.

Okay, enough of that, first up at the price of $450 after a $30 Easy Rebate, we find the Compaq Presario F761nr, another F-series notebook from Compaq, which is on the value and affordable side. As you can expect at under $500, you are not going to get the world, but this is certainly not a toy laptop! It is powered by the AMD Athlon 64 X2 DC TK-57 processor, 1gb of ddr2 memory, 160gb hard disk, super multi format dvd burner, 15.4" widescreen, built-in memory card reader (five in one) and built-in webam, and Vista Premium. Not bad for the price!!! What else can you ask for? Well, other than XP :)

The next laptop is geared towards people who enjoy 17" laptops. Why? Because it has a 17" widescreen :) It is the HP Pavilion dv9810us, and the price is $700 after a $50 Easy Rebate. Easy Rebate are Staples house rebates that can be submitted online without the hassle of mailing stuff and cutting upc bar codes. But as always, be sure to read the instructions, and the terms/conditions, and pay attention to deadlines and such.

Bu back to the dv9810us. It is powered by the AMD Turion TL-60 dual core, has 3gb of memory, 160gb hard disk, supermultiformat dvd burner with lightscribe, built-in webcam, and Vista. And of course the aforementioned 17" widescreen display that you can't miss because, well, it's big :)

Last but certainly not least, we find the Dell Inspiron 1420, priced at $750, and without any rebates. This is available in blue, black, red or pink depending on location and such. The processor is the Intel Centrino Core 2 T5500, with 3gb of memory, 250gb of hard disk, dvd burner of the supermulti variety, wireless, built-in webcam, and a 14.1" widescreen display for fans of mobility. The OS is course the adored Vista Premium.

Accessorize!
Staples is running a promotion where you can get a free HP printer with purchase of any notebook or desktop PC. Free after an Easy Rebate that is. The printer is the HP DJ D1455 model, which is obviously an inkjet printer. The Easy Rebate is $70, and after you submit and receive it, it will make your effective price $0. The out the door price is $70. Plus tax if applicable as always.

If you are a fan of Sony media, run to your local Staples, the 100-pack of the Sony DVD-R or DVD+R is on sale for $23. Most of these appear to be Made in Taiwan, but if you hit the lottery, you may find some Made in Japan.. They also have the 50-packs on sale for $13 each, making them 26c per blank disc, versus 23c per for the 100-pack.

Show me the way with a 19" Acer LCD monitor (model not named), yours for just $150 and that's without a rebate! The SKU is 668615, and it is a while-supplies-last feature. It has as expected 1440x900 resolution, and 5ms response time.

Color copies are 29c each, if you need color copies that is, while you can get a free PC Security Check through their Easy Tech Geek service. The free geek service is valid in-store only and includes a virus and spyware check, system analysis, risk management, and hard drive integrity checks.

A quartet of laptops at Fry's

Fry's Electronics has a quarter of laptops in their Sunday paper ads, three of which are WinDoze, and one of them a fingerpainting computer ;-)

We start with the lowest price, at $450, where we find the Toshiba Satellite A215-S5829, which featurs an AMD Athlon 64 X2 DC TK-57 processor, 1gb of ddr2 memory, 160gb had disk drive, 15.4" widescreen display, dvd burner, wireless and the usual assortment of features, Vista Premium included. No rebates, but no rainchecks, and one per customer, and while supplies last. Keep that wig and moustache in the car if you need more than one ;-)

Next up at $700, we find the HP dv2810us, after a $50 mail-in rebate. This is for the more mobile users as it has a 14.1" widescreen display, but it's no slouch as it is powered by the AMD Turion 64 X2 DC TL-60 processor, and has 3gb of ddr2 RAM, 250gb hard disk, dvd burner avec lightscribe, wireless, Vista Premium BlueScreen, and such. Limit one per customer!

Next up at $750 after a $50 MIR, we find the HP dv9810us, a laptop ideally suited for fans of 17" widescreen displays, because, well, it has one :) You also get the AMD Turion TL-60 processor, 3gb ddr2 memory, 160gb disk, dvd burner with lightscripbe, wireless, Vista Premium, and all the other assorted features you'd expect at this price point!

Last but not least, a laptop ideal for those interested in fingerpainting. Yes, it's an Apple :) Just kidding Apple fans :) It is the Apple MacBook, for $1300, with a 2.4ghz intel processor, 2gb memory, 160gb hard disk, dvd burner (yes, they call it Superdrive), and a 13.3" glossy widescreen display.

Accessorize!
Also at Fry'[s, a 22" widescreen monitor, of unknown brand is advertised for $190 after a $40 mail in rebate. Not a bad price if you are looking for a utility, extra or backup monitor. There's also a 19" for $140 after a $30 MIR. Also unknown brand.

You can check for these and other specials at Fry's. These prices are good until Tuesday April 15, 2008, yes TaxDay. They do change after Tuesday. Not sure where they go from there though :)

Eight hot laptop specials at Best Buy this week (April 13 to 19, 2008)

A new week dawns and the Sunday paper is loaded with advertisements! We are now looking at the Best Buy ad, to see what laptops they are offering for the week. As always, Best Buy does not do rebates, so if you are a rebate-hater, you are in luck :)

Laptops under $750
The lowest priced special is the Compaq Presario C751nr, a clearance model that uses a Pentium dual core processor, 1gb of ddr2 memory, and a 120gb hard disk drive. The screen is a 15.4" wide of the HD BrightView variety and it has a dvd burner as you can expect. The price? A cool and soothing $450 for your wallet :)

Next up at $600, we have a Best Buy exclusive, the Gateway M1625. This brand new model is powered by the AMD turion 64 x2 dc processor, 2gb of memory, 250gb hard disk drive, dvd burner, ATI Radeon X1270 graphics module, dvd burner with labelflash, 15.4" widescreen display and built-in webcam. As you can see when you compare with the Presario mentioned above, you pay about $150 more to get more features and more in terms of quantity (memory, hard disk, etc). And if you are looking for evidence that this is indeed a brand new model, it does come with Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). Not that that is necessarily a good or bad thing :)

Another Best Buy exclusive is the HP Pavilion dv6835nr, offered at exactly $700. This new lovely has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 15.4" widescreen display, 3gb of DDR2 memory (yes, three gigabytes), and a 250tgb disk. Also a dvd burner, built-in webcam and more. Vista SP1 as well. Limit one per household, so if you want more, be sure to line up the whole family or neighborhood :)

Laptops over $750
Yet another exclusive, this time the HP dv9815nr, is at $800, and it justifies its price thanks to a 17" widescreen display, an AMD Turion 64 X2 DC processor, 3gb of memory, 250gb disk, dvd burner, nVidia GeFORCE Go7150M graphics module, built-in webcam, Vista SP1 and lots more. Only one per customer, so if you want more, be sure to grab a wig and the fake moustache ;-)

Next up at the $900 price tier we find the Toshiba A305-S6837, yet another Best Buy exclusive model. This has a Centrino Duo Core 2 Duo processor system, 4gb of DDR2 memory (yes, four gigabytes), 320gb hard disk drive, dvd burner with labelflash, NextGen Wireless N by Inel, built-in webcam, 15.4" widescreen display, Vista SP1, and lots more. Who needs a desktop now?

And now we enter the wonderful world of Sony, with two Vaio models! First up at exactly one thousand dollars, we find the Sony VGN CR410E/R. "/R" of course stands for RED. This lovely has a 14.1" widescreen so it will appeal to the more mobile oriented laptop users, but it also packs a Centrino Duo Core 2 Duo blah blah blah processor, 3gb of memory, 200gb of hard disk, dvd burner, NextGen Wireless N by Intel, built-in webcam, Vista SP1, and lots more.

For an extra $150, you can get the Sony Vaio VGN CR420E/W, "/W" standing for white finish. This packs more processing power as it features the Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 processor. Vroom! Vroom!

Last but not least, we find the Vaio VGN AR 730E /B, "hiding" in the multimedia section of the advertisement. This is powered by a BluRay disc player feature with HDMI. But it's not just a glorified BluRay player. It's a powerful laptop as well as it has the new Intel Centrino Duo T8100 processor, 3gb of ddr2 memory, 320gb hard disk, dual layer dvd burner, nVidia GeFOrCe 8400M GT graphics module, built-in webcam, and a very multimedia friendly 17" XBrite-eCO widescreen display. What's the point of BluRay if you are going to be watching it on a 13" display? :) But a 17" display would begin to bring out the extra re$olution of BluRay$ :)

Ten hot laptop specials at Best Buy this week (April 6 to 13, 2008)

Lots and lots of laptops are featured in this week's Best Buy circular advertisement, found online and of course in your Sunday newspaper! Ten hot laptops, two of them priced at $450, and as with all things Best Buy, no rebates!

Under $700
As always we started with the lowest priced laptops first, and we have two of them occupying the $450 price slot. And they are no slouches!

One of them is a brand new model and a Best Buy exclusive, the Toshiba Satellite A205-S5825, with an Intel Pentium dual core processor, 1gb DDR2 memory, 120gb hard disk, dvd burner, and 15.4" TruBrite widescreen display. And of course with Vista Premium, along with Service Pack One (SP1). Join the millions of paying Microsoft beta-testers ;-)

The other $450 laptop is the Compaq Presario C751NR, which is on the other side of the spectrum: clearance, while supplies last, and one per customer. The main specs are similar as above, but it doesn't come with SP1, presumably because it's an old model (Insert Duh! moment here).

Moving on up by $100 we find the Dell Inspiron 1525 I1525-100B, at $550, with 2gb of DDR2 memory, 160gb disk, dvd burner, 15.4" TrueLife (reality show not included) widescreen display, and Vista SP1. This I guess can be used as a sign of how old a laptop model is. If it includes SP1 then it's probably a newer model (or perhaps a repackaged, rebundled model) :)

Then at $100 more, at $650, we find the new Best Buy exclusive HP Pavilion dv6815nr, which has even more memory (3gb DDR2), 160gb disk, dvd burner with lightscribe, the nVidia GeForce Go7150M graphics card system, 15.4" wide display, and of course Vista SP1.

Over $700
Yet another $100 price hike puts us at the $750 mark, where we find the Dell Inpsiron 1525 I1525-102B, with an Intel Centrino Duo Core 2 Duo processsor, 3gb of memory, 250gb disk, dvd burner, built-in webcam, 15.4" widescreen, and SP1 - among other features.

Also at $750 we have the new Best Buy exclusive HP Pavillion dv2815nr, which is limited to one per household. Why so? Because the price is right? We don't know :) It featuresd a 14.1" brightview HD wide display, AMD Turion 64 X2 dual core, 3gb memory, 250gb disk, dvd burner, GeForce Go7105M, built-in webcam, and such. And if you need an extra 90-watt AC adapter for HP laptops, you can pay $60 for it (part# EH642AA#ABA).

One step up the price ladder, at $800, we find another BB exclusive model, the HP dv2845se, which has similar specs to the aforementioned model but a whooping gigabytes of memory. We assume that's the max memory it can take, so it saves you the trouble and debates whether to upgrade the memory :)

And now to the second of three Toshis featured in the ad. Here we have the Toshiba U405-S2826 for $850. If you are not familiar with the Toshiba product line, remember this: U stands for "u pay more" :) This is designated as a "professional series laptop" by Best Buy, and with good reason, it features Vista Business with SP1. This is a new model, with Centrino Core 2 Duo processor technology, 2gb memory, 250gb disk, dvd burner, 13.3" trubrite wide display, built-in fingeprint reader and webcam, and sleek design with "Fusion" finish. Hey, are we buying furniture or computers here? :)

The third Toshi takes us into four figures, at $1100. This is the A305-S6843 with a 15.4" display, Centrino Core 2 blah blah T8100 processor, 4gb of ddr2 memory, 400gb of hard disk space, dvd burner, labelflash, NextGen Wireless-N wireless, builtin webcam, Vista Premium SP1, and a nice graphics card, the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470.

The ad ends with a trip to Apple-Land, where the MacBook Pro MB133LKL-A is offered at $2000, and it doesn't even have a screen ;-) Okay, we should stop making fun of Apples :) It has a Core 2 duo processor at 2.4Ghz, 2gb memory, dvd burner, 200gb disk, 15."4 widescreen with a GeForce 8600GT graphics card (256MB), wireless-N, iSight webcam, bluetooth 2.0, illuminated keyboard, trackpad with multi-gesture, and MacOS X Leopard. So you pay twice the price for the illuminated keyboard? :)

For an extra cool $500, you get a 2.5 ghz processor instead, an extra 50gb of hard disk space, and an extra 256MB of dedicated graphics card memory. This is model MB134LL-A.

Okay, we should stop comparing PCs and Macs, because such comparisons are *drum-roll* apples and oranges ;-)

Upgrade your small business laptops with these Dells!

Just because it's a business laptopts it doesn't mean you have to pay four figures! You get a lot of things done with sub-$700 business laptops! Obviously you can't expect workstation-like performance from sub-$1000 laptops, but for the vast majority of tasks, they are more than adequate!

In that spirit, we spotlight the VOSTRO 1400 featured at $579. But hurry, this is a limited time offer! The Vostro 1400 is powered by the Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 2GB memory, 160GB hard drive, dvd burner, and 14.1" widescreen display. Also of interest to some, you get free Asset Recovery and Recycling Services (ARS, a $50 value) for secure disposal of outdated systems and complete hard drive data deletion. Of interest to people who have strong operating system preferences or needs, you do have choice of Windows XP Home or Vista Basic.

If you prefer a business laptop with more ...latitude, then consider the LATITUDE D530 LAPTOP featured at $649!It has an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 2GB memory, 120GB disk, dvd burner, and a six cell battery for up to five hours of battery life (under ideal conditions of course). Your choice of XP or Vista! Please note that this model has a 15" standard 4:3 aspect ratio screen, not a 16:9 widescreen.

But if you do heavy duty work on the road or on the go, then you should perhaps consider a workstation-like laptop! And that's where the Precision M6300 Mobile Workstation featured at $1,748 kicks in. You got professional service and dependability you can (hope to) count on. The main specs? An Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, Windows XP Professional, 1GB memory, 80GB hard drive, dvd burner, 512MB NVIDIA video card powering a 17" widescreen display, along with three-year Limited Hardware Warranty, and Next-Business-Day On-Site Service.

As with all things Dell, you can customize them to your liking and needs, but please keep in mind you cannot bend the laws of physics :)

Eight hot laptops in the Best Buy Sunday paper circular

We have eight hot laptops listed in the Best Buy Sunday paper circular ad! You can see them all online, in your Sunday paper, or you can read all about them in this lovely blog :)

Laptops Under $750
As always, we start with the lowest price, which in this case is the lovely Toshiba A205-S5804. This is a clearance item at $450, and as with all things Best Buy, no rebates! This is no slouch, it has an Intel dual core processor, 1gb DDR2 memory, dual layer dvd burner, 15.4" widescreen, 120gb hard disk drive. One per household and no rainchecks. If you are not familiar with this notebook, be sure to check user reviews at Tablet PC Review.

Next up, at $550, Best Buy has an exclusive model, the Compaq Presario F756NR. This is powered by the AMD Turion 64 X2 DC processor, 2gb of ddr2 memory, 160gb of hard disk drive space, dvd burner, 15.4" HD brightview widescreen, GeForce 7000M graphics unit (nVidia of course). And yes, you do get the obligatory Vista Premium. We checked the internets but we did not find a review of the F756NR. Perhaps it's a brand new laptop model? So new that no one is talking about it?

Moving on up to $600, we have another Best Buy exclusive model, the Toshiba A215-S5818. This lovely is on clearance and one per household, and if you win this retail lottery, you get an AMD Turion 64 X2 DC processor, 2gb memory, 160gb hard disk drive, dvd burner, ATI Radeon X1200 graphics unit, and Vista Premium. Speaking of which, discussion of XP drivers and the A215-S5818 at Notebook Forums. A comparison of this model, with three other laptops can be found at One Family's Blog.

Yet another exclusive model, the HP Pavilion dv9715nr is offered at exactly $750. Why the higher price? Well for one thing you get a 17" HD BrightView widescreen display. Also an AMD Turion dual core, 2gb ddr2, 250gb hard disk, dual layer dvd burner with lightscribe, GeForce Go 7150M graphics system, built-in webcam, Vista Premium, and such. This is also a clearance item, and one per household, and no rainchecks. Did you win the lottery? :)

Laptops over $750
We start at $780 with the HP dv2719NR, a brand new model that features the AMD TL-64 dual-core mobile Turion blah blah blah processor. Also included 2gb ddr2 memory, 250gb hard disk, dual layer dvd burner with lightscribe, GeForce Go7150M, built-in fingerprint reader and webcam, along with a 14.1" HD Brightview display, and surpringly perhaps Vista Business. Well not really surpring, since this is part of HP's Professional Series laptops.

Another clearance model, at $800, is the Dell Insprin 1420 I1420B8104, with a Centrino Duo Core 2, 2gb memory, 250gb disk, dvd burner, 14.1" TrueLife widescreen, dvd burner, built-in webcam, and such. This is also a lottery laptop (one per household, no rainchecks, etc).

And now something for our Apple fans! The MacBook MB402LL-A is offered for $1100, and apart from the Apple logo, you get a 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 duo processor, 1gb memory (up to 4gb via upgrades), 120gb disk, wireless-N and bluetooth, Mac OS X Leopard with iLife 08, built-in Webcam, and such. The damage? $1100. If you want to boost your power and add a dvd burner, along with 2gb of memory and 160gb disk instead, you pay $1300. This is model MB403LL-A.

Don't mean to offend Apple fans here, but it is really sad that a $1100 laptop does not have a dvd burner. Come on Apple, wake up and smell the technology. Even a sub-$500 Windows-based laptop has a dvd burner. Wake up Apple!

And we conclude with the queen of high prices, Sony of course :) The Sony VGN-SZ750N (thank you Sony for the user-friendly model names) is offered for $1700. What justifies this price in addition to the Sony Vaio brand? The Centrino Duo Core 2 Duo T8100 processor, integrated mobile broadband capacity, 2gb memory, 250gb disk, dvd burner, GeForce 8400M, Wireless-N, Bluetooth, fingerprint reader and webcam, Vista Business and much more. Yes, as you can tell from the Vista "Bidness", this is part of what Best Buy calls "Professional Series Laptops". Oh we forgot about the display! It is a 13.3" Razor-Thin Xbrite widescreen. Razor of course not to be confused with the Battlestar Galactica movie "Razor". But we should leave that for a scifi blog like SyfyPortal.com :)

Attention Shoppers, Toshiba Qosmio F45 for $950 at Radio Shack

Radio Shack has a special on the Toshiba Qosmio F45-AV423, offered for only $950. The special ends on April 15, 2008, to coincide perhaps with the Tax Madness? :)

Meet the Qosmio F45-AV423
It's not a Ford truck, it's not an airplane, it's a laptop, powered by an Intel Centrino Core 2 1.66Ghz processor. It has a 15.4" widescreen display, 250gb hard disk drive (4200rpm SATA), a/b/N wireless, ethernet, built-in memory card reader, ExpressCard slot, Intel X3100 graphics. The memory is 2gb PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM installed, with a maximum supported memory of 4gb. Weight is 6.6 pounds.

The magic thing that causes the lower price is of course the supermulti format dvd burner with HD-DVD playback. As we mentioned before the demise of HD-DVD can create some nice laptop deals.

What are they saying about it on the net?
Mobile Tech Review has posted a full review of this HD-DVD based laptop. Be sure to check it out!

There is one customer review of this model at Amazon. A few more short user reviews are posted at Toshiba Direct.
