Eight hot laptops at Best Buy this week (April 27 to May 3)

There are eight laptops advertised in this week's Best Buy circular ads, which you can find online or conventiently stashed away in your Sunday paper! So, let's take a look! As always, there are no rebates to send, the price you see is the price you pay at Best Buy!

Under $750
We start at $450, with the lovely Toshiba Satellite A205-S5825, a Best Buy exclusive model, powered by the Intel Pentium dual core processor, 1gb of ddr2 memory, 120gb disk, dvd burner (dual layer), 15.4" TruBrite widescreen, Vista SP1, and such. Limit one per household. As you can see this is your typical sub-$500 laptop, but if you compare to a year ago, you sure do get a lot more bang for the buck! While this is not a speed-demon there are a lot, a lot of tasks, you can perform with this laptop!

Next up at the magic $500 mark, we find the Dell Inspiron I1525-1008. As the model name suggests, it has a 15.4" widescreen display. Also a Pentium dual core processor, 2gb of memory, 160gb disk, dvd burner (dual layer), Vista SP1, and such. Also one per household, so keep the wig and moustache and fur coat handy ;-) And the launch of the Vista Service Pack One (SP1) is a good way for you to easily tell whether you are looking at a new or older computer. Of course nothing stops them from unbundling and rebundling the computer :)

And now we take a $100 jump to $600 where we find the Gateway T1628 waiting for us. This lovely is loaded with the AMD Turion 64 X2 DC processor, 3gb memory, 250gb disk, dvd burner (dual layer, labelflash), built-in webam and Vista SP1. The display is a 14.1" Ultrabright widescreen, making it a reasonable compromise between size and portability. This is powered by the ATI Radeon X1270 graphics system. One per household and a Best Buy exclusive model as well.

The last one in this price category si the Toshiba L355-S7812 at $700, also an exclusive and one per household. This is targeting buyers who love bigger screens, because it has a 17.1" TruBright widescreen display. Also an Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo, 3gb memory, 200gb disk, dvd burner, built-in webcam and Vista SP1. Yum???

Over $750
At $800 even we find another exclusive, the Gateway M6846, with an Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo. Four gigabytes of ddr2 memory makes this the best alternative to brining an elephant with you, along with a 320gb hard disk. The display is your typical 15.4" ultabright widescreen. Notice how all the retailers try to use the same name but with different words. Oh the silliness of the marketing world :) Also dvd burner, built-in webcam, and the dreaded loved Vista SP1. Minimum five per store, one per householf, no rainchecks. Prepare for a fist fight over this model?

Next up we have a special edition model from HP, also a Best Buy exclusive, the Pavilion dv6885se at $1000. What do you get for that much? A 15.4" HD-brightview display fueled by the nVidia GeForce 8400M GS graphics module with Direct-X10, Centrino Core 2 Duo T8100, 3gb memory, 250gb disk, Vista SP1, dvd burner, nextgen wireless (N), built-in webcam, and lots more! Also note the special lovely color scheme of the laptop itself.

Moving along at $1250 we find the Gateway P6860-FX, and its power is reflected in the price and model name! It's 17" ultrabright widescreen is fueled by the nVidia geFORCE Go8800M GTS with 512mb of discrete video memory and DirectX 10. Also a Centrino Core 2 duo processor, 4gb memory, 320gb disk, dvd burner, wireless-N and Bluetooth too, built-in webcam and lots more. This Best Buy exclusive is a new model.

It is also avaiable in a special gamer's bundle for an extra $50. The special bundle includes one free game for Windows up to $50 in value, and a "game optimization" service. All must be purchased together in one ticket. A ticket to ride?

Last but certainly not least is a professional series laptop - Best Buy's words, not ours :) This is the Sony Vaio VGN-SZ750N/C for $1750. The 13.3" widescreen display keeps it small and portable, but it's no slouch in performance as it has an Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo T8100, 2gb memory, 250gb disk, Vista Business, dvd burner, nVidia 8400M GS, Wireless-N and Bluetooth, built-in mobile broadband capability, fingerprint reader and webcam too. That and more along with the Sony brand can be yours if the price is right :)

With the temperatures increasing, it's a good idea to use a laptop cooler, especially if your particular model heats up with regular use. The Targus Chillpad AWE01US is on sale for $30, and as a bonus it has four (4) USB ports on it!

If you are worried about the surface you are placing your laptop, you should consider the Belkin FBN060-BRN laptop and accessory bin for $40. Works for laptops up to 15.4" and has storage space too.

If you are not going far, or if you are double-bagging, the BuiltNY neoprene laptop sleeve (black or dotted) can be yours for $25. Model names are E-LS15-BLK and E-LS15-DO7.

Not quite the Unix boot sequence, but the init NT-NB101M laptop briefcase is only $20 and works with laptops up to 15.4". Yes, this is a traditional old-school laptop briefcase, nothing fancy or trendy. Ideal for humble people :)

If you want to feed your laptop an extra 1gb of PC5300 DDR2 memory, the Corsair XMS2 VS1gb667D2 is on sale for $30!

Meanwhile for extra backup storage, 100-packs of Sony blank DVD-R and DVD+R discs are on sale for $23 per spindle. That's a nice price (23c per blank) for the Sony brand. We do not know what the media code is, or whether these Sony blank dvds are made in japan or made in taiwan or elsewhere. We suspect it may vary from store to store, or even shelf to shelf. It's sort of like a lottery! If you are lucky, you may find the reveered Made in Japan!

For more details and such, be sure to check the Best Buy website. Happy shopping :)
