Ten hot laptop specials at Best Buy this week (April 6 to 13, 2008)

Lots and lots of laptops are featured in this week's Best Buy circular advertisement, found online and of course in your Sunday newspaper! Ten hot laptops, two of them priced at $450, and as with all things Best Buy, no rebates!

Under $700
As always we started with the lowest priced laptops first, and we have two of them occupying the $450 price slot. And they are no slouches!

One of them is a brand new model and a Best Buy exclusive, the Toshiba Satellite A205-S5825, with an Intel Pentium dual core processor, 1gb DDR2 memory, 120gb hard disk, dvd burner, and 15.4" TruBrite widescreen display. And of course with Vista Premium, along with Service Pack One (SP1). Join the millions of paying Microsoft beta-testers ;-)

The other $450 laptop is the Compaq Presario C751NR, which is on the other side of the spectrum: clearance, while supplies last, and one per customer. The main specs are similar as above, but it doesn't come with SP1, presumably because it's an old model (Insert Duh! moment here).

Moving on up by $100 we find the Dell Inspiron 1525 I1525-100B, at $550, with 2gb of DDR2 memory, 160gb disk, dvd burner, 15.4" TrueLife (reality show not included) widescreen display, and Vista SP1. This I guess can be used as a sign of how old a laptop model is. If it includes SP1 then it's probably a newer model (or perhaps a repackaged, rebundled model) :)

Then at $100 more, at $650, we find the new Best Buy exclusive HP Pavilion dv6815nr, which has even more memory (3gb DDR2), 160gb disk, dvd burner with lightscribe, the nVidia GeForce Go7150M graphics card system, 15.4" wide display, and of course Vista SP1.

Over $700
Yet another $100 price hike puts us at the $750 mark, where we find the Dell Inpsiron 1525 I1525-102B, with an Intel Centrino Duo Core 2 Duo processsor, 3gb of memory, 250gb disk, dvd burner, built-in webcam, 15.4" widescreen, and SP1 - among other features.

Also at $750 we have the new Best Buy exclusive HP Pavillion dv2815nr, which is limited to one per household. Why so? Because the price is right? We don't know :) It featuresd a 14.1" brightview HD wide display, AMD Turion 64 X2 dual core, 3gb memory, 250gb disk, dvd burner, GeForce Go7105M, built-in webcam, and such. And if you need an extra 90-watt AC adapter for HP laptops, you can pay $60 for it (part# EH642AA#ABA).

One step up the price ladder, at $800, we find another BB exclusive model, the HP dv2845se, which has similar specs to the aforementioned model but a whooping gigabytes of memory. We assume that's the max memory it can take, so it saves you the trouble and debates whether to upgrade the memory :)

And now to the second of three Toshis featured in the ad. Here we have the Toshiba U405-S2826 for $850. If you are not familiar with the Toshiba product line, remember this: U stands for "u pay more" :) This is designated as a "professional series laptop" by Best Buy, and with good reason, it features Vista Business with SP1. This is a new model, with Centrino Core 2 Duo processor technology, 2gb memory, 250gb disk, dvd burner, 13.3" trubrite wide display, built-in fingeprint reader and webcam, and sleek design with "Fusion" finish. Hey, are we buying furniture or computers here? :)

The third Toshi takes us into four figures, at $1100. This is the A305-S6843 with a 15.4" display, Centrino Core 2 blah blah T8100 processor, 4gb of ddr2 memory, 400gb of hard disk space, dvd burner, labelflash, NextGen Wireless-N wireless, builtin webcam, Vista Premium SP1, and a nice graphics card, the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470.

The ad ends with a trip to Apple-Land, where the MacBook Pro MB133LKL-A is offered at $2000, and it doesn't even have a screen ;-) Okay, we should stop making fun of Apples :) It has a Core 2 duo processor at 2.4Ghz, 2gb memory, dvd burner, 200gb disk, 15."4 widescreen with a GeForce 8600GT graphics card (256MB), wireless-N, iSight webcam, bluetooth 2.0, illuminated keyboard, trackpad with multi-gesture, and MacOS X Leopard. So you pay twice the price for the illuminated keyboard? :)

For an extra cool $500, you get a 2.5 ghz processor instead, an extra 50gb of hard disk space, and an extra 256MB of dedicated graphics card memory. This is model MB134LL-A.

Okay, we should stop comparing PCs and Macs, because such comparisons are *drum-roll* apples and oranges ;-)
