Laptop specials at Office Depot this week (July 6 to 12, 2008)

While their friends at Office Max are taking the week off, and their friends at Staples are giving office supplies away for a penny, Office Depot has a nice set of laptops on sale!

We start with the Toshiba Satellite A205-S5880 Notebook for $550 after $125 Mail-In Savings. This lovely Toshi has an Intel Pentium dual-core T2390 processor, a 15.4" TruBrite™ Widescreen, 3GB DDR2 memory, 200GB hard disk, dvd burner, integrated webcam & microphone, wireless (b/g), and such. Not bad considering you are getting three gigabytes of RAM!

Next up we have a Sony for $700 after a $50 mail-in rebate. It is the Sony Vaio VGN-NR498E/P notebook and as the model name suggests, it is a lovely pink. It features the Centrino technology with an Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 Processor, 15.4" Xbrite-Eco Widescreen, 3GB DDR2 memory, 250GB hard drive, dvd burner, wireless alphabet soup (ABGN), and things like that. If you are not familiar with the different processor speeds and performance, be sure to cross-reference this great site,

Furniture, Technology & More!

Moving along we find the HP Pavilion DV6936US on sale for $850 after a $50 MIR. What does it have that demands such a price? It has a 15.4" Brightview Widescreen fueled by the nVidia Ge-Force graphics card with 256MB of video memory. The processor is the Intel Core 2 Duo T5750, with 4GB DDR2 memory, 250gb disk, dvd burner with lightscribe, built-in webcam, and wireless alphabet soup (ABGN), along with the "lovely" Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition with SP1. Note this is the 64-bit edition, not the 32-bit edition you get in most sub-$1000 laptops.

Back to the Toshis, we have the Satellite L305-S5877 going for $600 after $50 in mail-in savings. This has a 15.4" TRUBRITE display,, Intel Core2 Duo T5750 processor, 3gb memory, 200gb disk, dvd burner with labelflash, built-in webcam and wireless, and things like that. Not bad considering this is a Toshiba, not a generic brand!

And now to a laptop with an unusual screensize, the Acer Aspire AS6920-6508 going for $700 after $50 MIR. The unusual screen? It's a 16" CRYSTALBRITE, widescreen and LCD of course, with a maximum of 1920x1080 high definition resolution. The processor is the Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5750, with 4GB DDR2, 250GB disk, dvd burner, fingerprint reader, webcam, wireless of course, and 64-bit Vista SP1. Viva la Vista!

Next up at $750 after $100 in mail-in rebates, we find the HP DV9920US, powered by the AMD Turion X2 DC TL-60 processor. This has lots of memory, 4gb DDR2 RAM, and it can share up to 1GB of that with the nVidia Ge-Force Go 7150M graphics card. Other specs include a 250GB hard disk, dvd burner, wireless, webcam, bluetooth, and 64-bit Vista SP1. Not a bad price considering all the specs!

We continue with the Toshiba Satellite A305-S6857 notebook for $800 after $50 in mail-in rebates. Office Depot (ODP) calls them "mail-in savings", perhaps to take the stigma out of the rebate name, but it's just the same thing. Silly ODP! This Toshi has a 15.4" TRUBRITE wide display, facial recognition software so be sure to look pretty for the computer, an Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 processor, 4GB DDR2 memory, 320GB hard drive, dvd burner, webcam, built-in FM Tuner (talk about going a full 360 degrees), wireless alphabet soup (ABGN), and Vista 64-bit SP1 crapola.

Last but not least is the Toshiba Satellite A305-S6862 notebook going for $900 and surprise-surprise, NO REBATES! Yes, no rebates :) It has a 15.4" widescreen, 500GB hard drive so it's multimedia friendly, and has a dvd burner of course. The processor is the Intel Core 2 Duo T5750, and it has 4GB DDR2 memory, webcam, built-in FM Tuner, face recognition software so keep the make-up in the computer bag ;-) Also has ABGN wireless, and things like that.

A duo of 14.1" HP widescreen laptops
There is a price premium on these smaller and more mobile laptops with usually improved battery life. We start with the HP dv2911us which goes for $650, but this tempting price is onyl after $150 with two mail-in rebates. You pay $800 in-store. It is about 1lb lighter than the 15.4" widescreen equivalent according to the specs, and it is fueled by the Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 processor, 3GB DDR2 memory, 250GB disk, dvd burner with LightScribe, webcam, wireless, and, yes, and Bluetooth. If you are patient and rebate-experienced this is a sweet price. For more search for it using the red ODP search box above.

The second one is the HP Pavilion DV294S0SE, a special edition notebook as the model name suggests. It goes for $750 after $100 using two mail-in rebates. You pay $850 in store. Plus of course all applicable sales taxes which none of the rebate programs refund. Think of it as your donation to help support your local state :) This computer has an AMD Turion X2 TL-62 DC processor, with a whooping 4GB DDR2 memory, a nice 320GB hard disk, dvd burner built-in webcam, wireless and bluetooth, along with 64-bit Vista BlueScreen SP1. Oh by the way, this look cool too and it has a Verve special edition chassis. It's not just a computer, it's a fashion statement and fashion accessory. Why pay $900 for a watch when you can instead get a fully functional computer? A $5 watch serves the same function as a $900 watch :)

Dirt Cheap Compaq Presario Desktop Tower computer
If you want to pay the absolute minimum and don't mind rebates, here is a low price: The Compaq Presario Tower SR5501P Desktop Computer with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 DC 4200+ processor for just $250 after two mail-in rebates totalling $100. You pay $350 at checkout and then submit/receive the rebate checks totalling $100. Do follow all the rebate instructions, and make copies of everything you submit, envelope included :) Other features include 1GB DDR2 memory, 160GB hard drive, dvd burner with LightScribe. Just don't expect it to behave like a $1000 gamer PC :)

Laptop and computer accessories
Not an LCD made for computers, but the Viewsonic 26" N2635w HDTV LCD is on sale for $450 after a $50 mail-in rebate. This is not a bad price at all considering the specs! Obviously you can't expect full 1080p at this size and price, but 1080i/720p is good enough for most people and programs in this day and age :) The resolution is 1366 x 768 WXGA.

And now a couple of computer monitor LCDs, a 19" Envision G918w1 for $150 after a $50 rebate which is a nice price for a model with 5ms response time and 800:1 contrast ratio. For a bigger size, the Samsung 2032NW is yours for $230 after a $30 MIR. This has 1680 x 1080 max resolution, 3000:1 contrast ratio, 5ms response time, and the brand name of Samsung of course :)

If you are a thrifty bargain hunter with the patientce of a rebate professional, you can get a 1gb Memorex MMP8565 mp3 player for $10 after a $35 mail-in rebate. The rebate costs 3.5X the effective product price :) Just don't expect it to behave like a $300 iPod or MicroZune. Quantities are limited and no rainchecks, but it doesn't hurt to try. A few months ago I was able to get a similar deal on a cheap mp3 player on Thursday, just because I asked and the customer service representative checked, and sure enough, they found the last one :)

Lots of computer accessories are on sale, just check for your favorites using the red search box above :)
